At this point, you might be wondering, who is this person, and why is she writing about traveling? Why is she doing all this traveling in the first place? Well, the answer to the second question is quite simple – I love it! Feeling the essence of a new country and learning about all its intricacies is energizing to me. I just can’t help but book my next trip as soon as the last one ends.
The answer to the first is a bit more complex. I didn’t grow up traveling. In fact, I grew up in a very frugal household. My dad considered driving 15 minutes to Lake Ontario a vacation. I remember going to middle school after spring break, seeing my friend’s exquisite braided hair – synonymous with pre-teens visiting the Bahamas in the early 2000s – and listening in awe as she shared stories about her trip to Turks and Caicos. I looked up pictures, saw the white sands and turquoise waters, and simply couldn’t believe something like that existed. It sounded like the most exotic place in the world. (I must add, the irony in all this is that since my dad retired, he has the travel bug too. We recently did an amazing two-week trip to Korea together. I guess it catches all of us at some point or another.)
As I grew older, many pieces fell into place that motivated me to pursue travel writing. I started a remote tech job, which made it easier to travel. I married my husband, Simon, a native German. His parents have graciously opened their home to us, giving us a home away from home when we’re in Europe. Finally, I started writing more regularly in 2024. I had spouts of journaling at different times in my life, usually when something dramatic was happening – which, as a college student, was often diluted to something insignificant like friend or boy drama. I let my stream of consciousness flow onto the page, not expecting anything coherent to come out of it, but rereading it proved the writing wasn’t half bad – sometimes even quite comical. I laughed at my ill-fated attempts to mend toxic relationships and admired my resilience in navigating challenges like my first job search.
One day, I decided to combine my love for travel and passion for writing, and I created this blog: Jetset Jackie. Day after day, I pour my stories, tips, and inspiration into this website. At the very least, it will serve as a collection of memories from my travels. Heck, I might even use my own advice to plan a second visit to my favorite destinations (I’m looking at you, Greece). And at the very most, maybe my work will inspire at least one other person to get out there and see the world too. It’s worth it.
